PURPOSE: To provide a device capable of driving an organic thin film EL display device with low power consumption. CONSTITUTION: This device for driving an organic thin film EL display device, by which a display element P(i, j) consisting of an organic thin film EL light emitting element is connected to each intersection of data electrodes Xi(i=1-m) and scanning electrodes Y(j=1-n) arranged in a matrix form, and the display element is made to emit light based on a signal on the data electrode synchronously with the scanning while scanning the scanning electrodes at a prescribed cycle, is composed of a comparison means 1i for comparing a signal amount S(i, j) of a display element P(i, j) on a prescribed data electrode Xi and also on a scanning electrode Yj in a presently displaying display period with a signal amount (i, j+1) of a display element P(i, j+1) on the data electrode Xi as well as on a scanning electrode Y(j+1) in the following display period; and a control means 3i for controlling a discharge amount of residual electric charges of the data electrode Xi on the presently displaying scanning electrode Yj in the blanking period immediately before shifting to the following display period, based on the comparison result by the comparison means 1i.
