The method has two stages (a) a first stage (101) for periodic collection of maritime traffic data from cooperating ships (NC,NC1,NC2,NC3) passing through the monitored zone (21). The ships send the data to a principal monitoring station (29);a second stage (102) for managing the global traffic situation, from the principal station using the collected data, each ship providing data about the local traffic situation Maritime shipping monitoring system which monitors a given zone. It uses a network of cooperating ships and a principal control center. A cooperating ship has at least means for collecting and processing maritime traffic data provided by its navigation system and means to transmit the processed data to the principal control center. This center has at least means for managing the global maritime traffic situation from the data transmitted from the cooperating ships and means for communicating with each of the cooperating ships.
