PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for inspecting metal material capable of obtaining the outputs of a sensor at a plurality of positions, in such a state that the distance between the sensor and an object to be inspected is made constant and accurately. SOLUTION: In a this method for inspecting the structure or composition of a metal material, using an eddy current type gap sensor 8, a contact part 10 of a moving body 6 provided with the sensor 8 is brought into contact with a brake disk 16, and the moving body 6 is moved in the contact state to gold the distance between the sensor 8 and the brake disk 16 to a predetermined distance and, in this state, the outputs of the sensor 8 at a plurality of the positions of the brake disk 16 are obtained, and the structure or composition of the material of the brake disk 16 is inspected from the outputs of the sensor 8 at a plurality of the positions.
