PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the throughput of a polarizer. SOLUTION: The polarizer 300 is composed of pairs 302 and 352 of PBS cubes. A 1st cube 302 of either pair transmits P-polarized light and reflects S-polarized light. A wavelength plate 330 rotates the transmitted light so that the transmitted light enters an S-polarized state. A 2nd cube 352 receives only light reflected by the 1st cube 302 and redirect the reflected light in a transmission direction. A polarizing filter 370 filters the reflected light, but does not filter the rotated light. The total transmission throughput of the polarizer 300 is improved by the transmission through the wavelength plate 330 and a stopper 384 provided on the flank of a 2nd cube 352 stops light from impinging on the 1st cube of the adjacent pair.
