Data collected by a downhole logging tool during drilling is transferred to a memory of a downloading device after the tool has been brought back to the surface. The data is then downloaded into a computer. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) Data transfer apparatus for use as above has a computer with a processor, a memory and a communications port coupling the processor to a down hole logging tool. (b) Downloading procedure includes attaching a probe to a downhole logging tool, using the probe to read data from the tool and transferring this data to a computer at the surface. (c) A probe for use as in (b) has a memory receiving data from a downhole logging tool, a processor transferring data to the memory and a connector coupling to the tool. Preferred Features: There are several tools at the bottom of a drill string connected by a central interface module inside the drill string to a memory. The downloading device couples to this memory. The device has a radio connection to the computer. The computer commands the data transfer from the device.
