PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device capable of operating with high speed and displaying a gray scale. SOLUTION: The electro-optical device is provided with a first substrate having pixel electrodes, a second substrate, a liquid crystal exhibiting spontaneous polarization and held between the first and second substrates and switching elements electrically connected to the pixel electrodes. The switching element is characterized by being controlled so as to keep an electric charge supplied to the pixel electrode is two times or below the product of the spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal and the area of the pixel electrode.
