PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rewritable phase change optical recording medium less liable to suffer deterioration due to repetitive overwriting, excellent in shelf durability and ensuring good erasure characteristics even under recording conditions of high linear velocity and high density. SOLUTION: The optical recording medium wherein the recording and erasure of information are carried out by a phase change between amorphous and crystalline phases is constituted of a contact layer 1 consisting of a compound obtained by combining an element M1 pertaining to the family IIIA to VIB of the 2nd of 6th period in the Periodic Table except carbon with oxygen or a compound obtained by combining an element M2 pertaining to the group IIIA to VIB of the 2nd to the 6th period in the Periodic Table with carbon and a recording layer consisting of a compound represented by a formula (I) (Ge0.5Te0.5)×(Sb0.4Te0.6)1-X}1-Y-ZSbYAZ, where A expresses elements belonging to the family A to VIB of the 2nd to 6th period except Ge, Sb and Te. |
