PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video tape recorder that can provide information useful to retrieve a video image recorded on a video recording tape to the video recording tape itself. SOLUTION: For example, heads SP-, SP+ record a video image photographed by a camera 14 onto the video recording tape 7 via a video recording processing circuit 12 and a switch preamplifier circuit 11. A controller 16 writes data and time information at a point when receiving an alarm signal to a memory 17. When the tape end comes, the video recording tape 17 is rewound and reaches a state that the tape top is wound on a rotary head cylinder 6. An OSD 18 generates a black/white character video image on the basis of the date and time information read from the memory 17 and records the video image onto the tape top. Thus, upon reproducing the video image on the tape top as a still picture, when the video image is recorded can be recognized. Furthermore, since color killer is active when the still picture at the tape top is reproduced, uneasy to see image due to colored display characters can be eliminated.
