PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a single photographing device to use an image pickup element whose image pickup surface consists of plural blocks, regardless of the presence/absence of defects and the pattern of the detects. SOLUTION: This image pickup element 52 is provided with a chip 53, provided with an image pickup surface 31 and a package 41 for fitting this chip 53. The image pickup surface 31 consists of the plural blocks 31a to 31b, which are provided with image information reading line 39 respectively. A position- adjusting mechanism 55 for changing the relative position of the surface 31 of the element 52 and the optical axis 60 of incident light toward the surface 31 from an optical system 51 by 1/2 respectively of the vertical and a horizontal length 63 of the blocks 31a to 31d each time is provided.
