A method for recovering effective ingredients contained in an animal and the like which comprises immersing wastes from an animal, especially a head, a bone, an internal organ and the like of an eel in water or an aqueous solution of ethanol in a pressure cooker; decocting the aqueous mixture under about 2 atm at about 120 DEG C for about 30 min; removing residual solids from the resultant broth stock and then cooling, to thereby give a semi-solidificated layer floating on the broth; introducing the semi-solid layer into a sealable vessel; heating the vessel, after sealing it, gradually to about 40 DEG C by using a water bath, to thereby give initially a solution containing, dissolved therein, the above semi-solid substance, and subsequently a yellow transparent liquid floating on the solution; and recovering the yellow transparent liquid as an liquid containing effective ingredients. The resultant liquid contains a large amount of effective ingredients such as animo acid and retinol, and thus is usable as a material for a health-assisting food, a cosmetic, a drug, and the like. The method can be employed for recovering effective ingredients in a high concentration and with safety.
