SALMON REARING

A fish farm, and a method of rearing salmon in such a farm, has two lakes (11, 12) both adjacent a natural water-course (10). A first channel (13) extends from the water-course to the first lake (11), a second channel (19) leads from the first lake (11) back to the water-course (10) and also to the second lake (12) and a third channel (20) leads from the second lake (12) to the water-course (10). The first and second channels are provided with respective sluices (14, 16) to control the water flow therealong. A fish filter (17) is arranged in the second channel (19) to separate salmon parr from salmon smolt, the smolt being directed along the second channel (19) back to the water-course and the salmon parr being directed into the second lake (12), during drainage of the first lake by opening the sluice (16) associated with the second channel. Salmon smolt are thus directed to the water-course to permit their migration without overloading the water-course with salmon parr. The fry may develop to parr and smolt in essentially natural conditions but in a protected environment.
