The invention concerns a method and telecommunication equipment for transmitting data to a subscriber telephone terminal provided with data processing hardware and software (5D, 7D) for its management. Said unit is for example a telephone terminal (3) or a main unit (5, 7) of a shared installation (4, 6) serving several telephone and/or radiotelephone (8) terminals (3'), it is linked to a telephone network at a connecting exchange unit (2, 2') by one or a small number of analog telephone lines (L). The method consists in sending control and/or information messages, from the central connecting exchange of the terminal unit to the data processing means of said unit, besides the usually transmitted signals, after they have been coded so that they can be transmitted by the analog telephone line. Said messages can be interpreted at the unit through a code conversion.
