An apparatus for tensioning a seat belt has a piston (2) which is driven in a guide tube (1) and is connected to the belt webbing (4) of the seat belt via a traction cable (3) and a cable deflector (5) for the traction cable 3. The traction cable acts on one end of the belt webbing of the seat belt and is looped 180 DEG around the cable deflector (5) and the portion of traction cable extending between the cable deflector and the belt webbing (4) is guided substantially parallel to the axial direction of the guide tube (1).
