The present invention relates to compositions and methods for regulating cellular process, such as the cell-cycle, cell proliferation, cell adhesion, and cancer, especially processes that involve TGF beta signalling. In preferred embodiments, the invention relates to methods of identifying agents comprising one or more of the following steps, a) administering a test agent to cells, wherein the cells have reduced or no TGF beta /SMAD activity, b) administering to said cells an amount of TGF beta , or an amount of a ligand which acts as an agonist or partial agonist on the TGF beta receptor, effective to produce a phenotype; and c) determining whether TGF beta elicits the phenotype in the presence of the test agent, whereby said agent is identified as regulating said phenotype of the cells.
