[Also in Division B5] A method of fabricating a cutter head comprises forming a plurality of substantially identical plate-like elements 14, coating the elements with a bonding material, assembling the elements in abutting relationship in a stacklike array, treating the elements so as to cause the bonding material to bond the elements into a unitary body, and providing the body with at least one cutting edge. Each element which is stamped from sheet steel has a central bore 24, bores 34, 38 and bosses 32, 36. Bores 38, 34 on one element co-operate, respectively, with bosses 32, 36 on an adjacent element. The bore 38 and boss 32, and the bore 34 and boss 36, are at an angle differing from 180 degrees by an indexing angle of, say, 1 degree 5 minutes, so that when a number of elements are assembled, they are indexed one from another so that edges 26, 28 thereon form a helix which edges 26, 28 may form cutting edges or be machined to form a seating 30 to receive a continuous cutting edge 16, silver soldered to the seating. The elements may be coated with a bonding material, such as copper plating, and assembled on a support. The assembly is heated while the elements are pressed together by a weight to bond the assembly together. Alternatively, the elements may be bonded together by an adhesive, by a tube inserted in the bores of the elements and flanged over at its ends, or by dowels. |
