New 4-((hetero)cyclyl)-pentafluorosulfuranyloxybenzene derivatives (I) are claimed. New 4-((hetero)cyclyl)-pentafluorosulfuranyloxybenzene derivatives of formula R<1>-(A<1>-Z)n-A-OSF5 (I) are claimed: R<1> = hydrogen or a 1-12C alkyl or 2-12C alkenyl group, which may be mono-substituted by cyano or trifluoromethyl or at least mono-substituted by halogen, in which 1 or more non-adjacent methylene (-CH2-) groups may be replaced by oxygen,sulfur, carbonyl, 1,3-cyclobutylene, carboxy (-CO-O- or -O-CO-) or oxycarboxy (-O-CO-O-); A<1> = trans-cyclohexane-1,4-diyl, in which one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by -O- and/or -S-; 1,4-phenylene, in which 1 or 2 methine groups may be replaced by nitrogen; a 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)-octylene, piperidin-1,4-diyl, naphthalen-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl group; or cyclohexan-1,4-diyl. All groups may be substituted by CN, chlorine or fluorine; A = a 1,4-phenylene group with 0-3 cyano and/or halogen substituent(s); Z = -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -CH2O-, -O-, -O-CH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -CC-, a single bond, -OCF2-, -CF2O- or (CF2)v-; v = 2, 3 or 4; n = 1, 2 or 3. An Independent claim is included for liquid crystal media containing >= 2 liquid crystal components, including compound(s) (I).
