Production of a thermoplastic resin (I), comprises reacting a polyphenylene ether resin (II) with a polyorganosiloxane (III) and optionally a coupling agent, where (III) has at least one functional group selected from amino, epoxy, hydroxy, phenol, carboxy, amide, methacryloyl, vinyl, alkoxy, carbonyl and imino groups. Production of a thermoplastic resin comprises reacting: (a) a polyphenylene ether resin (II); (b) a polyorganosiloxane (III); and optionally (c) a coupling agent. Where (III) has at least one functional group selected from amino, epoxy, hydroxy, phenol, carboxy, amide, methacryloyl, vinyl, alkoxy, carbonyl and imino groups and comprises structural units of formula (IIIa)-(IIIc), provided that the (IIIa)/(IIIb) molar ratio is 0.1-10: R1R2SiO1.0 (I) R3SiO1.5 (II) R4R5R6SiO0.5 (III) R1-R3 = 1-3C alkyl or 6-10C aryl; R4-R6 = 1-6C alkyl, 6-12C aryl, 1-6C alkoxy or OH. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a thermoplastic resin (I); and (2) a composition comprising (I) and another thermoplastic resin (IV).
