The method involves orientation of a impression cylinder (8) to direct a cylinder gap (32) towards a varnish applicator cylinder (9). The applicator cylinder is pivoted between a print-on position (90a), a print-off position (90b), both into the cylinder gap and a clearance position (90d) out of the cylinder gap. The clearance position operating mode is selected when it is necessary to print a sheet in the printing units of the machine and thereafter convey it through an inactive varnishing unit (7), without varnishing the sheet. Pivoting of the applicator cylinder takes place coaxially with axis of rotation of the varnish supply roller. An Independent claim is also included for printing machine
