The invention relates to a method for producing alkali methylates from an aqueous alkaline lye that is optionally mixed with methanol and methanol in a reaction column, said column comprising at least 5, preferably 15 to 30 theoretical trays between the inlet of the alkaline lye and the site of addition of the methanol. According to the inventive method, the vapor methanol-water mixture formed during the reaction is separated in a reaction column. According to an embodiment of the invention, the reaction column that is configured as a bubble-tray, valve-tray or sieve-plate column is provided with trays, each letting through maximally 5 %, preferably </= 1 % of the liquid. In another embodiment of the invention, the reaction column that is provided with a double jacket is configured as a column that is filled with fillers or oriented packings at a temperature in the double jacket that is 3 to 10 DEG C higher than the temperature in the inner of the column. In all sections of the column diameter that correspond to more than 2 % of the total column diameter, the average ratio of the liquid flow to the vapor flow with respect to the liquid is not exceeded by more than 15 %, preferably by not more than 3 %.
