OXIDIC ZINC-ALUMINIUM CATALYSTS

The invention relates to oxidic zinc-aluminium catalysts for producing unsaturated fatty alcohols with 8 to 24 carbon atoms by hydrogenating unsaturated fatty acids, fatty acid low-alkyl esters or fatty acid glycerides. Said catalysts are obtained as follows: (a) an aqueous solution or dispersion of a zinc and aluminium salt is produced and the poorly soluble hydroxides are precipitated by the optional addition of a base, or (b) an aqueous solution or dispersion of a zinc salt is produced and the poorly soluble hydroxides are precipitated by the addition of an alkaline solution of an aluminium salt and optionally a base, or (c) an aqueous solution or dispersion of an aluminium salt is produced and the poorly soluble hydroxides are precipitated by the addition of an alkaline solution of a zinc salt and optionally a base. The precipitate which has formed is separated from the zinc aluminate, dried, optionally calcified and subsequently granulated and shaped into pieces, with the proviso that the zinc and aluminium salts are used in the molar ratio 5:1 to 1:5 in relation to the zinc and aluminium metals.
