The present invention aims to provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent head contact and output suitable for high data transfer rates and having excellent high-speed sliding durability suitable for high-density recording. For this purpose, a magnetic recording medium comprising a nonmagnetic lower layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and an upper layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder provided on a substrate in this order is disclosed wherein the surface of said upper layer has a flexibility represented by a scratch depth of less than 300 nm but 200 nm or more and said magnetic recording medium has a Young's modulus of 800 kg/mm<2> or more in the tape width direction.
