In a method and apparatus for product packaging, each oblong packaging element, such as a complete or partial sleeve from a supply 18 is printed with unique information at printing station 24, such as weight data from product weighing station 30, and is fed long-edge-first 38 towards a packaging station 16 where the product and its unique packaging element are brought together. An indexed relationship 40 between the product and its packaging element is established and maintained whereby direct printing of the unique and therefore variable weight data 28 on the packaging element or sleeve is feasible without the need to resort to printing on adhesive labels for application to the packaged product 42.
