1,222,881. Carbon fibres. NIPPON CARBON CO. Ltd. 3 Jan., 1968 [6 Jan., 1967; 9 Jan., 1967; 20 Feb., 1967], No. 365/68. Heading C1A. Carbon fibres are produced by carbonizing carbon containing fibrous materials by heating at between 100‹ C. and 1500‹ C. in an atmosphere containing between 10% and 100% by volume of hydrogen chloride gas, the heating being finished at between 150‹ and 1500‹ C. The fibre produced may be graphitized at a temperature of up to 3000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere. The temperature during the carbonization step is increased by between 5‹ and 500‹ C. per hour to final temperature of between 150‹ to 1500‹ C. Tension may be applied to the fibre during heating in order to improve its elastic properties. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,093,084.
