A packing element for a gas/liquid contact tower comprises a helical coil made by winding an elongated member in such manner that the pitch varies between different portions of each turn. A portion of each turn touches a portion of an adjacent turn. The thickness of the elongated members is between one eighth and one half of an inch and the ratio between the thickness of an elongated member of a coil and the average distance between successive turns of the coil is between 1:0.4 and 1:2.
