Process comprises forming a charge of hot liquid metal and scrap, the metal containing at least 10% by wt. chromium plus over 1% carbon and the scrap containing 10-40% liquid metal. A stream of oxygen is directed onto the charge to reduce the carbon content and to react with some components and form a slag. The oxygen stream is continued through a submersible lance below the surface to reduce the carbon content to 1% and then continued until it is 0.1%. The flow of oxygen is interrupted and a reducing agent added to the slag. The lance is placed in the slag and a non-reactive gas under pressure passed through it to reduce slag turbulence and aid in the reduction of chromium. The liquid metal is then refined to the required composition. Steel may be produced in an electric or a basic oxygen furnace. Chromium is economically recovered.
|
