PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect and reinforce the head and neck of a sitting person in rear end collision and the like without resulting in a complex constitution. SOLUTION: A head rest body 12-2 formed dividedly of a base element 12-1 is biased in a forward extending direction by the biasing force of a driving spring 26, and is retained in a backward initial position against the biasing force of the driving spring 26 under the locking action of a stopping means 28 release actuated only for an inputted impact load in rear end collision. The head rest body 12-2 slid in the forward extending direction by the releasing action of the stopping means 28 can be retained in a forward extended position so as not to retreat under the locking action of the locking means 38.
