PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous emulsion excellent in viscosity stability at a higher temperature (small in temperature dependence and excellent in higher temperature shelf stability), improved in waterproofness and low temperature shelf stability, and a method for preparing an aqueous emulsion excellent in polymerization stability. SOLUTION: The aqueous emulsion comprises a vinyl alcohol polymer having 1-15 mol% ethylene unit in a molecule and a saponification degree of at least 95% as a dispersing agent, and a polymer prepared from a vinyl ester monomer as a dispersoid. The aqueous emulsion has a elusion percentage of not more than 1.5%, water absorption of 30% when a film prepared from the emulsion is soaked in water at 20 deg.C for 24 h, and the ratio of emulsion viscosity at 60 deg.C to emulsion viscosity at 20 deg.C, T60 deg.C/T20 deg.C, is at most 2.
