An automatically controlled tube bending machine for bending serpentine coils from different straight tube lengths comprises a feeding device 9 for feeding tube 1 to a bend former 3, the feeding device having means 15 for measuring the length RS3 of tube remaining after a bending operation by locating the end of the tube length, the measuring means 15 being adapted to send a signal characteristic of the remaining length RS3 to a control device (not shown) which controls the feeding device 9 so that the starting length AS3 of the next tube length 2 fed to the bend former 3 can be joined to the end of the tube length 1 without any further matching. The measuring means can be mechanical feelers which actuate a limit switch, a light emitting means co-operating with a photo-electric cell or an induction coil. The tube ends are welded together by either butt or gas welding at V3. |
