PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame retardant polyester fiber having a stable flame retardancy for a long term, and also excellent in dyeability, abrasion resistance and thermal stability. SOLUTION: This flame retaedant polyester fiber meets the following physical properties, has a phosphorus content of 500-50,000 ppm and is made of a copolyester copolymerized with a phosphorus compound represented by formula (1) (wherein R1 is a monovalent ester-forming functional group; R2 and R3 are each a halogen atom, a 1-10C hydrocarbon group or R1; A is a bivalent or trivalent organic residue; n1 is 1 or 2; and n2 and n3 are each an integer of 0 to 4): tanδmax>=0.250; Tα<=132 deg.C; and 1.730<=1.358×SG-Δn<=1.770, wherein tanδmax, Tα, SG andΔn are the maximum value of a loss tangent in dynamic viscoelastic measurement, a temperature at which the loss tangent becomes maximum, a specific gravity and a birefringence, respectively.
