PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically adjust the tension of a conveyor belt to a preset value without the manual operation of an operator and without stopping the operation of a machine after the tension of the conveyor belt is once adjusted. SOLUTION: This paper sheet dividing apparatus having the tension adjusting device is provided with a pair of conveyor belts 11(12) for clamping and conveying paper sheets, a belt tension adjusting mechanism 17(18) having an adjusting roller 13(14) where a part of the conveyor belt 11(12) is wrapped and adapted to adjust the tension of the conveyor belt 11(12) by moving the adjusting roller 13(14), and a control device 36 for moving the adjusting roller 13(14) by operating the belt tension adjusting mechanism 17(18) to keep the tension of the conveyor belt 11(12) adjusted by the belt tension adjusting mechanism 17(18) to a preset value.
