1,224,264. Radial ply tyres. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. 17 July, 1969 [24 July, 1968], No. 36108/69. Heading B7C. A radial ply tyre comprises a plurality of (e.g. 2, 4 or 6) endless breakers 20, 30, constructed of parallel cords 22, 32, respectively, disposed at an angle of between 25 degrees and 65 degrees to the mid-circumferential plane A of the tyre, embedded, together with uniformly dispersed oriented fibres, in an elastomeric compound. The cords and the fibres, which may be oriented parallel to the cords, are of nylon, rayon, polyester, cotton, glass, or metal. Different materials may be employed in successive breakers to give them different values of Young's modulus. Each breaker may have a mixture of fibres of different materials. The fibres may be oriented parallel to the cords by calendering a fibre-containing compound upon continuous cords. In order to make a breaker having fibres oriented at an angle to the cords, a fibre-containing compound is calendered separate from the cords to orient the fibres, and the cords are then coated with the compound, suitably oriented. |
