PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air bag device capable of sufficiently absorbing striking energy to an occupant, softly receiving the occupant when an impulse velocity is small or the occupant is relatively small, and certainly receiving the occupant in two steps when the impulse velocity is large or the occupant is large. SOLUTION: This air bag device comprises a retainer 1 in a vessel shape with an opened front surface, an air bag 2 stored in the retainer 1, an inflator 3 for expanding the air bag 2, and a lid for covering the front surface of the retainer 1. The inside of an air bag 2 is partitioned by a vertically extending partition 10 to a first chamber 11 on a gas guiding opening 4 side and a second chamber 12 on the occupant side. Between it and the air bag 2, gas passages 13, 14, 15 for communicating the first chamber 11 with the second chamber 12, and check valves 16, 17, 18 are provided.
