PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a latch device for a smoke extracting window mountable on either side of right and left of a window sash. SOLUTION: A driven plate 22 for controlling a lock plate 10 in a lock position and a release position is movably provided on a substrate 6. A slide plate 31 is provided on the substrate 6 movably to a stationary position and to operating positions on both sides thereof. The slide plate 31 has a pressing part 39 so that the driven plate 22 is pressed and moved to the release position when the slide plate 31 is moved to one operating position. A release plate 40 is provided so that the direction of the movement of the slide plate 31, when moved to the other operating position, is turned to transfer the movement to the driven plate 22. Accordingly, the slide plate 31 can release the lock plate 10 in every operating position.
