1,270,127. Exchange resins based on vinylaromatic polymers. OCTROOIEN MAATSCHAPPIJ "ACTIVIT" N.V. 8 April, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 17753/69. Headings C3C and C3P. [Also in Division C1] An exchange resin of the ion exchange and/or oxidation-reduction type is made by reacting a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon polymer with from 1À5 to 4 parts by weight of a sulphur halide, per part by weight of the polymer, in the presence of from 1 to 5 parts by weight of a Lewis acid catalyst, per part by weight of the polymer, to form polymer sulphides or polymer polysulphides, oxidizing the polymer sulphides or polymer polysulphides to a corresponding cation exchange resin containing -SO 3 H groups or reducing the polymer sulphides or polymer polysulphides to a corresponding ion exchange resin containing -SH groups, and recovering the oxidized or reduced polymer thus formed. The vinyl aromatic polymer may be a copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene. The sulphur halide may be sulphur monochloride or a mixture of sulphur chlorides. The catalyst may be sulphuric or chlorosulphonic acid. The oxidation may be carried out with nitric acid and oxygen or oxygen and nitrogen oxides. The reduction may be carried out with sodium sulphide or hydroxide.
|
