PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing disk-shaped glass substrates having ultra-smooth surfaces which can easily manufacture these glass substrates at a low cost and an apparatus for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: Molten glass 24 discharged from a melting furnace nozzle 15 is placed on a lower die 17a. The molten glass 24 is press formed by using the forming die consisting of the lower die 17a and an upper die 17c and a regulating member 17b for regulating the gap between the lower die 17a and the upper die 17c, by which the disk-shaped glass substrate having a diameter X and thickness Y satisfying the relation X>40 is formed.
