1,097,960. Electric selective signalling. GEODYNE CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1965 [Aug. 30, 1965], No. 52069/65. Heading G4H. Bistable devices FF 1 , FF 2 , FF 3 , (Fig. 1), selectively brought to their " 1 " state to control the voltage output from a ladder network of impedances Z 1 , Z 2 , Z 3 for comparison with an unknown analogue input, in an analogue to digital converter, are also serially connected for use as a shift register. In the embodiment described a thermistor Z is connected to one arm of a bridge B1 to affect the balance by the change in resistance thereof in response to the surrounding temperature, the output from the ladder network being connected to another arm of the bridge B1 for comparison with the impedance value of the element Z. An error signal on lead 14 is applied to a level quantizer 16, an output pulse " 1" from which enables the first bistable device FF 1 controlling the impedance Z1. If the output from the comparator is then less than zero a " 0 " output pulse from the quantizer 16 is obtained which resets the first bistable device and sets the second. This process is repeated until a balance is obtained, the output pulses from the quantizer 16 being fed to a transmitter TX. The analogue digital converter may also be used for determining the salinity of sea water. To transmit digitized data from either a shaft encoder 1<SP>1</SP> representing, for example, position or from a frequency counter 3<SP>1</SP> representing, for example, speed, a plurality of gates G1, G11, G1<SP>11</SP>; G2, G2<SP>1</SP>, G2<SP>11</SP> are enabled by timing pulses T1, T2, respectively to control the bistable devices the states of which are then read out serially via the line 24. |
