PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene in a high selectivity of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene. SOLUTION: This method comprises a naphthalene hydrocarbon selected from naphthalene, methylnaphthalene, dimethylnaphthalene, trimethylnaphthalene, a polymethylnaphthalene and/or their mixture with one or more kinds of benzene hydrocarbon selected from benzene, toluene, xylene, trimethylbenzene, tetramethylbenzene, pentamethylbenzene and/or hexamethylbenzene under an at least partially liquid phase condition in the presence of a catalytic composition containing a zeolite belonging to MTW structure type and at least one element selected from P, B and Si. The method is preferably carried out in the presence of a methylating agent. |
