PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inexpensively producing 3,4- alkylenedioxythiophenes and 3,4-dihydroxy-2,5-dicarboalkoxythiophens in high yield. SOLUTION: [1] Thiophenes represented by general formula (2), wherein R1 and R2 are each independently of each other an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an aralkyl group or an aryl group is obtained by allowing an oxalic ester to react with a thiodiacetic ester represented by general formula (I), wherein R1 and R2 are independently from each other the same meanings in the formula (II) in a solvent in the presence of an alcoholate base in a concentration (in W/W) of 20-50%. [2] Thiophenes represented by general formula (3), wherein U is a 1-4C alkylene group which may be substituted with 1-8 hydrogen atoms, halogen atoms, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an aralkyl group or an aryl group is obtained by allowing the thiophene prepared in [I] to react with an alkylene dihalide or an alkylene diester in the presence of a base in a solvent. |
