PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an excellent liquid crystal material for a component of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This compound has a difluoromethylene bond and is represented by the general formula (1) (R1 is a 1-16C alkyl group and CH2 in the group may be independently substituted with O, S, C≡C, CH=CH, COO or OCO without two or more contiguous O or S; R2 is a 1-10C alkyl and the terminal methyl may be tri- or mono-fluorinated; A1 is a group similar to A4, trans-1,4- cyclohexylene or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl; A2 and A3 are each indenpendently 1,4- phenylene or a halogen-mono- to halogen-tetrasubstituted 1,4-phenylene; A4 is a group similar to A2 and A3, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl or pyridine-2,5-diyl; Z1 is OCF2, CF2O, SCF2 or CF2S; Z2 is methyl or mono-, di- or trifluorinated methyl, ethyl, CH2CF3, CF2CH3 or CF2CF3; Z3 is a single bond, O or COO; m1 and m2 are not simultaneously 1 and are each 0 or 1; m3 is an integer of 0-8; and *indicates optically active carbon). |
