PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brilliant coating composition which comprises an interference pigment and an aluminum flake pigment and gives a brilliant coating film emitting an interference color, exhibiting deep color tone without causing a whitened feeling at a shade part and imparting concealing properties even when the coating film is deep in hue, a method for forming a coating film and a coated matter coated by the method. SOLUTION: The brilliant coating composition comprises an aluminum flake pigment (1), an interference mica pigment (2) having a dark region, an interference brilliant pigment (3) other than the interference mica pigment (2) having a dark region and a vehicle (4), and satisfies the requirements: I. The mass ratio of (1)/(3)=90/10-10/90. II. The mass ratio of (2)/(3)=80/20-20/80.
