PURPOSE: An apparatus and method is provided to prevent damage to power element caused due to over-current and reduce cost by maintaining maximum power consumption constant. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a total current sensing unit(10) for sensing the current of input power(AC); an AC-DC converting unit(12) for converting the input power into DC voltage; an input power sensing unit(100) for sensing the level of input power in the DC voltage level output from the AC-DC converting unit; a control unit(11) for setting the total current limiting value of the corresponding input power in accordance with the signal output from the input power sensing unit, comparing the total current limiting value with the value of total current sensed by the total current sensing unit, outputting a pulse width modulation signal in accordance with the comparison result, and outputting a power factor compensation control signal for the value of the sensed total current; a power factor compensation unit(13) for taking as an input the DC voltage output from the AC-DC converting unit, and compensating power factor by switching the received DC voltage in accordance with the power factor compensation control signal; an inverter unit(14) for taking as an input the power factor compensation signal from the power factor compensation unit, switching the received signal in accordance with the pulse width modulation signal output from the control unit, and outputting a three-phase AC power; and a compressor(15) driven by the three-phase AC power output from the inverter unit.
