PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling channels of a digital TV are provided to normally output broadcasting signals by searching a frequency band where the broadcasting signal settled by a user when a sky wave and the other external signals are received at the same time, thereby improving the reliability of the product. CONSTITUTION: A control part extracts frequency and frequency moving information of a channel selected by a user(S11). The control part settles frequency corresponding to the channel selected by the user and changes the channel accordingly(S12). It is judged whether a signal of the selected channel is received(S13). If the signal is received, the frequency moving information is stored(S14). The received broadcasting signal is decoded and processed for being displayed on a screen(S15). If the signal is not received, the channels are successively increased with searching whether the corresponding channel exists(S16-S17). If not exist, an error message is output to the screen(S18).
