PURPOSE: A compatible optical pickup apparatus is provided to reduce manufacturing cost and increase production efficiency by substituting a flat type beam splitter for a cubic type beam splitter to be applied to the existing compatible pickup apparatus. CONSTITUTION: The first(211) and the second light source(221) emit the first and the second light beam which have a different wavelength each other. An optical path change device reflects and/or permeates the first and the second light beam separately, and then converts the process path. A diffraction optical device generates the second light beam as a plurality of diffraction light. An objective lens(237) focuses the first and the second light beam on the recording surface of an optical disc(100) which has a different thickness each other. An optical detector(240) receives a reflection light which is emitted and reflected from the recording surface of the optical disc(100) and receives an information signal and an error signal. The first(213) and the second flat plate type beam splitter(223) reflects the first light beam and the second light beam which is made an incidence from the first(211) and the second light source(221), and changes the process path to the optical disc(100), and then permeates the first light beam and the second light beam separately which is reflected and made an incidence from the recording surface of the optical disc(100).
