The invention relates to a candlestick having a bowl-like retainer 1 with room 4 for receiving and supporting the lower part of the candle such that it is kept in an upright position. In the receiving room 4, at least one supporting ring 2, 3 is arranged, the inner periphery of which comprises flexible tabs 5, 5' which by bending enables inserting candles having various diameters in the opening 7 delimited by the tabs 5, 5'. The tabs 5, 5' will abut against the candle surface. Candles with various diameters are stably fastened in an upright position in the same candle stick, in which the burnt out candle will extinguish automatically. The supporting ring 2, 3 is situated beneath the edge level of the retainer 1, but above its bottom, such that the supporting ring 2, 3 is immersed in water when a suitable amount of water is present in the bowl-like retainer 1.
