PURPOSE: Provided are a hydroxyaldehyde derivative and methoxyalcohol which are useful as a raw material for synthesizing retinal that is the basic raw material of carotenoids important in the fields of medicines, feed additives, plants, food additives, and so on. CONSTITUTION: The hydroxyaldehyde derivative of the formula(1) is manufactured by oxidizing a diol derivative of the formula(3), and the methoxyalcohol of the formula(2) is manufacturing by selectively methylating the compound of the formula(3).
