PURPOSE: To enhance the operability of especially a reproducing and editing processing operation. CONSTITUTION: In this recording apparatus, a plurality of image data, audio data or the like are recorded, using a disk-like recording medium such as an optical disk 20 or the like. The recording apparatus is constituted so as to be provided with a file generator 5 additionally. Among the plurality of data which are recorded in the optical disk 20, extracted information such as, e.g. a part of image data is extracted. An index file, in which the extracted extract information is stored, is generated by the file generator 5. The generated index file is recorded in a prescribed position, such as, e.g. in the innermost circumference of the optical disk 20. Then, in a reproducing and editing operation, the extracted information is read out from the index file to be output via a prescribed display part or the like which is formed in the apparatus. On the basis of the extracted information which is the output, a retrieval operation which specifies desired data out of the plurality of data which are recorded in the optical disk 20 can be performed easily.
