PURPOSE: A cap assembly of a secondary battery is provided which slows down a rising rate of internal pressure of the battery by interposing an elastic device between a safety jaw of a variable plate and a fixed plate so as to prevent explosion or fire. CONSTITUTION: The cap assembly of a secondary battery comprises: (i) a variable plate(10) which is combined to and sealed up with an opening of a can(4) by interposing an insulating gasket(8); (ii) a fixed plate(18) which is installed on the lower part of the variable plate by interposing an insulator(16) and has an air hole(18b); (iii) a coil spring(11) which is adhered to the variable plate(10); and (iv) an electric current cutoff valve(11a) which is installed on the end part of the coil spring(11) to open and shut the air hole.
