In a closed vessel with an upward working flow kept in position by an auxiliary granular mass which has a S.G. 1, which is introduced into the vessel by counterflow under pressure from a second vessel until it packs the first vessel and maintains the ion bed static, whereupon the counter flow is turned off. During regeneration the pressure flow is reversed and the granular packing mass is returned to the second vessel. At all times the vessels are filled with water.
