A thermal insulating device (20), and process for making it, are presented. The inventive thermal insulating device is formed of a cylindrically shaped shell (20) comprising multiple layers of a continuous spiral wound anisotropic flexible graphite sheet (25), the layers of spiral wound graphite sheet (25) being separated by and bonded to a cured resin (A, B, C, D, E).
