<p>The present invention relates to a compartment for use in the modular construction of a system for the treatment of the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine, notably for a silencer for a vehicle engine, which system comprises a series of compartments including a hollow housing body member (1) within which one or more treatments are to be performed on a gas stream passing through the compartment, at least two adjacent compartments carrying opposed circumferential outwardly directed radial flanges (7) at or adjacent the adjacent ends thereof whereby the compartments can be secured to one another, the radial flanges (7) presenting an annular face directed axially towards the housing body (1) of the compartment which face is inclined axially away from the housing body member, characterised in that the radial flange (7) is recessed substantially wholly within the radial dimensions of the adjacent portion of the housing member (1). The invention also provides an engine silencer comprising an axial series of such compartments and an engine fitted with such a silencer. The invention further provides a method for forming the recessed flange at the end of the axial housing.</p> |
